I remember my first Jennifer Weiner book, Good in Bed (affiliate link). It was a great read and she quickly became one of my favorite authors.
Her latest book, All Fall Down (affiliate link), tackles a subject I have not had to deal with in my life. In fact, the only time I’ve even heard it addressed was on an episode of Oprah.
The book deals with Allison, a suburban wife and mom who suddenly begins to question if she could be abusing prescription pills after taking a quiz in a magazine at the doctors office. Up until then she hadn’t really considered it a problem but the quiz has her questioning herself. Although she doesn’t change anything and in fact presses on. Her habit is becoming harder to hide and making her do do things that she normally wouldn’t do. Not to mention it’s an expensive habit! I just knew there would come a breaking point in the book but I expected it to be a lot more dramatic.
I thought Jennifer did a great job detailing how addicts hide their addictions, sometimes from themselves, and how hard it is to actually pull themselves out from under that addiction. The book really opened my eyes to this problem that so many people seem to be dealing with. It doesn’t take much to go from using prescription pills for what they are intended for to helping you get through the day. Hopefully this book will help some people see themselves in Allison.
The recipe comes from a dinner Allison has with her family once she is on the road to recovery. Of course, it’s summer so I had to use my slow cooker for the meal instead of turning on the oven. I absolutely love chicken in the slow cooker because it comes out so moist and just falls off the bone – hence the picture of the chicken in the slow cooker.
Slow Cooker Lemon Chicken

1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp Seasoning salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
2 Chicken Breast quarters
2 lemons, one cut in half and the other thinly sliced
2 sweet potatoes, peeled and roughly chopped
1 Tbsp honey
Instructions:
In a small bowl, mix together garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, seasoning salt and pepper.
Add enough potatoes to the slow cooker to fill the bottom of the pan. Drizzle honey on the sweet potatoes.
Sprinkle the spice blend on the chicken. Place chicken breast side up on top of the sweet potatoes.
Place lemon halves around the chicken. Add lemon slices on the top of the chicken halves.
Add remaining sweet potatoes, if any, around the chicken. Drizzle with a small amount of honey.
Cook on high for 3 1/2 hours.
