Yesterday I spent the day with my mom, dad, sister and brother-in-law in Austin. After we finished up some business, we decided to grab something to eat before heading home.
My dad loves BBQ and we’ve been talking about making a trip to John Mueller’s food trailer to check it out. Since we were already in Austin we decided to trek on over there for some grub.
Growing up, John’s and my family lived close to each other. He and I went to school together and my sister was in the same grade as John’s brother. We always enjoyed getting some of the best BBQ Texas has to offer at his late father’s place, Louie Mueller BBQ.
I hadn’t seen John in years so it was great to see him looking so good. I couldn’t wait to taste his food and see how far the apple falls from the tree.
As soon as we pulled up we saw John. He came by and greeted us and offered us a beer. After he left my dad and I both lamented that we should have taken one.
There were quite a few people ahead of us in line but the wait wasn’t too long. They had a canopied area to wait so the heat wasn’t even that bad.
The same with the picnic tables – they all had umbrellas to ward off the sun.
The menu was extensive and, like his father, John closes when the food is all gone.
My father, mother and I each ordered a chopped beef sandwich. This was a massive sandwich piled high with mouth watering beef.
My brother-in-law ate a brisket sandwich and he ravished that thing so quickly. Also like his dad, John gives out samples as you are ordering and I have to admit, that was some of the best tasting brisket I’ve had.
The brisket had such a nice crust on it and that is one of my favorite things. It wasn’t overly spicy, which I was grateful for.
My sister ordered the pork shoulder and she was not disappointed. It was juicy and tender and luckily she shared a bite with us all.
Whenever I go to a BBQ place I have to order the sausage. It’s one of my favorite things to eat and something I’ve been craving for a while. Usually the places we go to, it’s too spicy for me but this one was just perfect. It had just the right degree of flavor and I ended up eating too much of the sausage and had to take most of my sandwich home.
I can’t wrap this up without also mentioning the potato salad. I want that recipe because it was the perfect blend of deliciousness. I’m thinking of it right now and glad we brought some home so I can have a potato salad sandwich.
Thank you so much John for the delicious lunch.
And folks if you’re in this neck of the woods, you have to stop by and try John Mueller BBQ. You won’t be sorry.
